Special Educational Needs
The staff of St Joseph’s CBS aim to help all of their students to reach their full potential. To achieve this, there are comprehensive support services for students with differing educational needs in place, co-ordinated by our five qualified SEN teachers.
Additional support is given, when needed, to address the individual needs of the identified students. Students are supported in their learning through a combination of Team Teaching, where extra support is provided in the large class setting, on a one-to-one basis and in small groups.
Parents are encouraged to inform the school of their son’s learning needs and to raise any new concerns with a member of the SEN Team. Where necessary, the school will liaise with the Primary Schools to get a clearer understanding of students’ needs.
The school also has the facility of a small Special Class, where some students with Special Educational Needs are taught. The students are prepared for the Junior Cert and the world of work and most students progress on to complete the Leaving Certificate Applied Programme. This class caters mostly for students with Mild General Learning Difficulties. The class nurtures the talents of the identified students through a broad curriculum and a variety of practical tasks.
St Joseph’s CBS is part of the Pilot Project for the New Model for the Allocation of Resources to Schools with Students with Special Educational Needs since 2015.
